Having gone from strength to strength this year with EP releases from the likes of #Dunk, #Vici and #Drumcatcher, Lyon drum and bass label #ImpactMusic are seeing out 2020 in style with the label debut from in-demand Austrian DJ/producer #Division. Hailing from St. Pölten, the critically acclaimed talent has quickly gained a reputation as one of his country’s most talented craftsmen of drum and bass, releasing with #Overview, #Delta9 and #DeepWithinRecordings and counting the likes of #Noisia, #Skeptical and #Kyrist among his supporters. Renowned for his signature style of brooding steppers, he continues to showcase his knack for creating minimal, atmospheric sonics over the course of his new four-track EP, #Telepathy.
Kicking off proceedings, the project’s title track hits with precision and intricacy, with throbbing white noise and meticulously automated reverb contributing to the sub-heavy song’s intensity and urgency. Picking up where its predecessor left off, “#INY” deploys a nostalgic vocal sample before bursting into a similar whirlwind of frantic kicks, pattering cymbals and murmuring basslines. The appropriately titled “#Angst” is a more cinematic affair, its groaning ambiances leading into an intriguing blend of clattering foley clicks, pitched percussion and reverberating drones. Concluding the EP is its heaviest cut of all, the resonant deep dubstep weapon “#Eternal”. Featuring a combination of chugging growls, accented synth stabs and hyped-up vocal samples, the track makes for a welcome surprise and an exciting teaser of #Division’s flawless ability to pull off a 140 number. Who knows what other tricks he’s got up his sleeve.
