Ephyum - Black Clouds "The Remixes" - C4C Limited / LTDC4C023

Since releasing “#BlackClouds” via #RedLightRecordings in 2018, Venice producer #Ephyum has continued to excel with recent releases on esteemed drum and bass labels #BadTaste and #Close2Death, bagging airplay on stations as gargantuan as #BBCRadio1. Two years on, the track has received a new lease of life in the form of #BlackClouds: #TheRemixes. Staying true to the #RedLight sound and ethos, the project is an international affair, calling on some of the label’s former signees as well as #C4C stalwarts, special guests, and #Ephyum himself for five bold reinterpretations of this fan favourite.

“#BlackCloudsVIP” finds #Ephyum substituting the original song’s hip hop-inspired intro for an epic cinematic arrangement overlaid by resonant plucks. This quickly hurtles into a frenzied drop, decorated with rising synths, arpeggiated flourishes and frantic stabs, hitting with double the urgency of the original to turn the track into an even more gripping neurofunk roller. Sustaining this unbounded energy, Berlin-based producer and #C4C/#RedLight affiliate #Myselor steps up next, transforming the track into a blistering number dominated by pummelling basslines and offset by staccato chords.

Meanwhile, Aussie producer #Transforma – another #C4C and #RedLight regular – flips the track into a juddering, stop-start neuro weapon, utilising crunchy, fuzzed basslines and unconventional rapid-fire snares which cut through the mix. Fresh off the back of stellar EPs on #VandalRecords and #Delta9, fast-rising Rome natives #Invadhertz undertake an ambitious reimagining of the track, reenvisaging it as a winding, minimal stepper. Finally, German producer #Kaiza – the founder of #T3KRecordings and a member of the #C4C-approved group Instinkt – reunites with Korea’s #Xeomi following their recent two-tracker on #BadTaste for a juggernaut of a remix. They reinvent “#BlackClouds” as a snarling neurofunk weapon which uses unconventional drum rhythms, drawing the project to an exhilarating close.
