Over the last two years #MD has become one of the most sought-after figures in drum & bass, coming through the ranks to drop a release on #Ram’s sister label #Program and playing at the seminal Fabric club in London. Since then he’s dropped a plethora of hard-hitting tracks, gaining support across both the radio airwaves and club spaces globally. He now steps into the roster of Soul Trader to release two-track single ‘#Choked’ and ‘#ThinkingofYou’, staying true to the sounds which have enabled him to become so notorious across DJ set lists. And #SoulTrader was the perfect platform for #MD to unleash new music, considering the sizeable reach the imprint has built throughout its time releasing music. Based in West London and led by #DJSurplus, their aim was always to bring listeners the most high-quality sounds from both up and coming and more established artists. When looking at their roster, which includes names such as #BCee, #Villem, #McLeod, #TotalScience, #Digital and #ConcordDawn, it’s easy to see how they’ve done this.
‘#Choked’ is the fist of two brand new tracks, blending the light and dark elements, merging the distorted, sing-song vocal and its rolling vibe. It’s given its heaviness through is clanking drum sequences, elevated by every high-hitting snare and pounding kick, making this record a certified hurter through speaker stacks. There’s still a melodic undertow which carries the track and it gives it a softer touch, however the weighty subs of ‘#Choked’ add a punch which won’t go unnoticed by the darker underbelly of #MD’s fan base.
On the flip, #MD offers ‘#ThinkingofYou’ and as the name suggests, it takes you down a smoother path, one underscored by elevating melodies and patches of percussion. A range of vocals drift in and out of its composition as you’re taken through its motions, providing the reverse to #MD’s normally aggressive production style. However, a grinding one-note bass cuts through the mix throughout, still giving it the #MD edge.
#MD wraps up another single for a trend setting label and in doing so, reiterates why he’s garnered so much attention by the mainstay labels.
