So much has happened since Sweetpea last appeared on Spearhead with her evergreen debut EP ‘Undercover’ 18 months ago.
A bastion and champion of the scene for so many years, the tireless Londoner has continued to elevate her game no end with every missive she’s fired into the universe on labels ranging from Sofa Sound to Demand Records. Now back on BCee’s label, Sweetpea is packing another bountiful selection that’s steeped in soul, urgency and good old fashioned gulliness. Largely created with good friend and previous collaborator Shady Novelle, trust us – this isn’t called ‘100% Vibes’ for nothing!
The title track takes the lead. Written during the great rave shutdown, Shady laments the lack of freedom we experienced and wondered whether we’ll ever get to win, or sin, again over one of Natasha’s most robust and relentless jungle schematics to date.
‘Love Is’ follows with a big switch-flipping sense of momentum. Dropping the urgency but adding the tension, ‘Love Is’ takes off from where ‘Undercover’ left us way back at the start of 2021. A provocative piece that explores the purity, tragedy and femininity of love, it’s Shady at her most poetic and Sweetpea at her most emotional.
Deeper into the EP we hit the paydirt with two heavyweight late night sessions: Uncompromising, savage and loaded with that energy we all stored up over our time away from the dance, ‘Take Your Time’ hits with gnarled reese bass, gargantuan drums and Shady’s jazzy croons while the drum-focused ‘Brewdog’ cracks open a cold one right upside your senses and immerses you in sub bass and percussion hypnosis.
So much has happened in the time Natasha was last on Spearhead yet nothing has changed; Sweetpea is still 100% dedicated to the movement and right at the very forefront. Vibes for miles
